While it might not be showing up in the win column yet, Tim Draper believes the Edmond Santa Fe wrestling team is headed in the right direction. After winning their season opener against Putnam City West, the Wolves have dropped their last two duals by slim margins, most recently a 39-30 setback Tuesday night against Putnam City.
“We wrestled alright on Tuesday, we’re battling but have room for improvement,” Draper said. “We’re starting to be competitive and get after it a little bit and that’s what I’m looking for. We’re working hard it’s starting to show.”
Leading the way for the Wolves (1-2) this season has been sophomore Walter Smith, who pushed his season record to a perfect 3-0 with an 8-6 decision Tuesday night.
Draper has also been pleased with Brad Suggs (140), Joey Robertson (145), Tre Doakes (152) and heavyweight Tyler Shaw, who have each picked up a pair of wins this season. Suggs, Doakes and Shaw each earned a fall against Putnam City, while Robertson notched a 6-2 decision.
“Those guys have done very well this year and I’m I expecting them to step up this weekend at Deer Creek,” Draper said.
The Wolves will get their first taste of tournament action tomorrow when they head to the Deer Creek Invitational.
