EDMOND - The Edmond Sun announced its first team selections for the 2010 All Edmond Wrestling team, which included seniors Tre Doakes (145) and Tyler Shaw (Hwt). The complete first team is as follows:

103 - Josh Breece - Memorial

The Memorial freshman had no trouble adjusting to the varsity level as he advanced to the state tournament in his first season with the Bulldogs. Breece finished the season with a 24-7 record.

112 - Sam Eccles - North

The senior put the finishing touches on an impressive high school career with a third-place finish at state, after coming up empty handed the past two seasons. Eccles (34-6) also earned top three finishes at Geary, Sand Springs and Yukon, before placing first at regionals.

119 - Zac Dunlop - Deer Creek

The Deer Creek junior made the most of his first trip to the state tournament as he fought back through the consolation bracket to place fourth at 119.

125 - Josh Durham - North

The senior was a major reason for the Huskies success this season. Durham placed first at Sand Springs, Yukon and regionals to earn a second straight trip to the state tournament. Durham didn’t let an early loss at state trip him up and battled back to finish fourth.

130 - Sean Scruggs - North

Scruggs was quietly one of the Huskies most consistent wrestlers this season. The junior went 25-15 and earned his first trip to state, while taking fourth at Yukon and regionals.

135 - Alec Warren - North

The freshman was easily one of the most impressive newcomers at the state tournament, as he came within a couple points of a state title in his first go at it. Warren (30-6) also notched titles at El Reno and regionals, while finishing second at Yukon and third at the Mid-America Nationals.

140 - Matt Muhlinghause - North

Muhlinghause got off to another strong start, but saw his chances for a second trip to the state tournament derailed by injuries. The senior notched a third-place finish at the Geary Tournament and later helped the Huskies advance to the 6A Dual State Semifinals with a gutsy performance.

145 - Tre Doakes - Santa Fe

The senior provided the Wolves with stability and leadership again this season. Doakes (25-13) was just a win away from the state tournament and led the team with 40 takedowns.

152 - Heath Boyd - Deer Creek

Boyd turned it up a notch in his final season with the Antlers. Despite coming up short in his bid for a state title, the senior capped his season with a fourth-place finish at the state tournament. Boyd also finished first at the Carl Albert Tournament and 5A West Regional.

160 - Austin Schafer - North

The junior made big strides this season as he earned his first trip to the state tournament. Schafer (29-10) was also a regional champion and earned top four finishes at the Mid-America Nationals and the Yukon Tournament.

171 - Virgil Walker - North

The senior was the heart and soul of the Husky lineup and earned his fourth trip to the state tournament. Walker (25-9) also finished second at Yukon, third at the Mid-America Nationals and regionals and fourth at Sand Springs.

189 - Ry Huff - Memorial

Huff was one of the many bright spots for the young ‘Dogs team that came within a point of dual state. Huff (25-12) often found himself wrestling up weight classes, but still earned his first state tournament berth.

215 - Alex Christensen - Deer Creek

A broken finger kept Christensen off the mat for the first half of the season, but he quickly made up for it with a state runner-up finish in his second trip to state. The junior finished with a 16-4 record and also placed second at regionals.

Hwt. - Tyler Shaw - Santa Fe

Shaw wrestled like a veteran despite first taking up the sport at the conclusion of the football season. The senior finished with a 25-16 record while qualifying for state in his only season with the team.

Brett Dunning (112) faced the #2 seed from the East Regional, junior Tray Dorrell (23-1) from Del City. Dorrell had previously been undefeated this season until losing in the East Regional Championship. Dunning wrestled a tough match, but lost 8-2. In the first round of consolations, Dunning defeated senior Shane Fletcher (25-14) from Bixby 3-2 in the first round of consolations. On Saturday, Dunning lost a 5-2 decision to senior Ron Arteaga from Muskogee in the consolation semi-finals. Dunning finished his freshman season with a record of 25-14.

Tyler Shaw (285) faced the #3 seed from the East Regional, senior Blake Shields (30-10) from Sapulpa. Shaw battled to the end, but lost a narrow one-point decision 3-2. In the first round of consolations, Shaw lost a 3-2 decision to senior Brandon Banta from Yukon. Banta was the West Regional Alternate, replacing Colton Cline from Norman North, due to a knee injury. Shaw had an amazing “rookie” season for the Wolves, finishing at 25-15.

EDMOND - Tyler Shaw is a latecomer to wrestling, but the Edmond Santa Fe senior is a fast learner.

Shaw was second at the Class 6A West regional as a heavyweight. He’s been wrestling a little more than two months but might find himself in the mix at state later this week.

Seeded second, Shaw is 25-14, with many of those losses coming at the beginning of the season. He is undersized for a heavyweight but big enough to get the job done. Shaw also played on the defensive line for the football team. He will play college football at East Central in Ada.

“Our head coach had been talking to me about it during football season,” Shaw said of wrestling. “It sounded like fun. He thought I could contribute something. It took off from there, and I’ve had a lot of fun with it.”

Shaw said it’s another way to keep in shape as he prepares for his first college season. Santa Fe wrestling coach Tim Draper said Shaw’s ability to learn fast has fueled his success.

“He keeps learning,” Draper said. “In the heavyweight division there’s a lot of pushing and pulling and hand fighting. With his football prowess, it’s helped him. It’s surprised me, but I knew he was a competitor.”

Shaw is a dark horse to reach the finals, but heavyweight is often unpredictable. Broken Arrow’s Terry Williamson returns after winning a state title as a junior, but the weight remains mostly wide open.

“I’m pretty surprised with the whole thing,” Shaw said. “I had to learn some of the rules and pretty much start from scratch, but I think I’ve got a good chance to get to the finals.”

Santa Fe competed at Yukon and qualified a pair with senior Tyler Shaw and freshman Brett Dunning each earning their first trip to the state tournament. Shaw pulled off a couple of upsets on his way to a runner-up finish at heavyweight, while Dunning pinned Keaton Randall of Westmoore in the third-place match at 112.

“Last year we came up a little short, so I’m tickled to death to have a couple of guys make it this year,” Santa Fe coach Tim Draper said. “I had a lot of young guys and some seniors step up and I’m excited to see them get there.”

Also finishing as state alternates were Tre Doakes and Walter Smith.

The State Wrestling Championships are set to begin Friday at State Fair Arena, with the final wrapping on Saturday evening.

Walter Smith (171) lost to Norman’s Kyle Pasque 4-3 in the consolation semi-finals. Smith a sophomore, finished in fifth place as a State Tournament Alternate picking up the 4-3 decision over Yukon’s Carson Mathews.

The Edmond Sun

EDMOND - The sound of an official’s whistle does wonders to Tyler Shaw. Before a wrestling match, the Edmond Santa Fe heavyweight is the stereotypical gentle giant. But once that piercing sound hits Shaw’s ears, a violent rage takes over his body.

“It’s just something I do in football too,” Shaw said. “You can be calm outside and then once it’s time to go you have to be ready to snap into and it give it everything you’ve got.”

While Shaw has brought down opponents like a seasoned veteran this year, nothing could be further from the truth. Shaw, who was a standout nose guard on the football team, thought about taking up wrestling in the past but finally gave it a try this season with some convincing from head coach Tim Draper, who also serves as the freshmen football coach.

“Coach Draper just talked to me about it and told me I could help out the team and I’d like it,” said Shaw who signed a football scholarship with East Central University. “And I thought it’d help me stay in shape for college football next year.”

Draper’s eye for talent was right on with Shaw. The first-year wrestler quickly took to the sport and is currently the seventh ranked heavyweight in Class 6A. Shaw has also developed into one of the Wolves’ top wrestlers with a team-best 22-13 record and 17 falls.

“What he’s doing as a first-year wrestler is pretty phenomenal,” Draper said. “He’s very coachable and he just enjoys it. I just wish we’d had him when he was younger.”

But it’s not just Shaw’s accolades on the mat that have impressed Draper. The senior has also been a leader and role model for the young Wolves squad.

“He’s probably been one of the more vocal leaders with young kids,” Draper said. “He’s been a blessing and best thing for our young group of kids.”

Shaw admits the success he’s had this season has come as a bit of a surprise, but believes his experience on the defensive line helped ease the transition.

“Being on the line you have to work with your hands a lot and in wrestling you have to use your hands well,” Shaw said. “And some of the takedowns are like tackling.”

Draper has also been a bit startled by Shaw this year, but believes he has a good chance to qualify for the state tournament. The first-year wrestler has beaten some of the best heavyweights in the state this season, but will have to replicate that today when the Class 6A West Regional Tournament kicks off at Yukon High School. Shaw will be joined by five of the top heavyweights at the regional tournament, including Norman North’s Colton Cline, Muskogee’s Ryan Lester and Hunter Davis of Choctaw, who are all ranked ahead of him.

“He’s beaten some of the guys he’ll face, but it’s a real tough regional, so hopefully he can beat them again,” Draper said.

All three Edmond schools will compete at the 6A West Regional in Yukon, while Deer Creek will host the 5A West Regional. The first rounds are set to begin at noon today with the semifinal and consolation rounds to follow at 6 p.m. Saturday’s action will start again at noon with consolation rounds and will wrap up the finals at 6 p.m.

The Edmond Sun

EDMOND - After missing a couple of duals and a some valuable practice time on the mat, Edmond Santa Fe head wrestling coach Tim Draper was unsure of what to expect from his young team entering its dual with Norman on Thursday night.

Draper was pleasantly surprised to say the least after his squad downed Norman 39-28.

“We have such a young squad, every night is a surprise for us. But it is a good win for us, and it was good for us to get back out there tonight,” Draper said. “We hadn’t wrestled in a while with the weather the way it was last week, and not going back to school until yesterday. It can be pretty tough on you.”

Derick Wadlington earned a big win at 189 pounds earning a fall to give the Wolves a little breathing room, before senior heavyweight Tyler Shaw finished it off with a pin.

Tre Doakes decisioned his opponent at 152 pounds, and sophomore Eric Hebert won a decision at 140 pounds.

“I was pleasantly surprised with Eric’s win. That was big for us for him to beat his opponent,” Draper said.

The Wolves will take on Bishop McGuinness on Tuesday night and wrap up the regular season with Mustang later in the week. Santa Fe didn’t get to wrestle in the Chickasha Tournament due to cancellation, but hopes to wrestle in the Northwest Classen tournament.

“The next three weeks are very important for us as we get ready for regionals. This was a good win. This is a very young team and conditioning is so important in this sport. So with practice being hit and miss, this is was a building block for us,” Draper said. ‘We’re just trying to get back on the winning track and we want to finish strong. We competed tough tonight.”
